Hoppers are on !!!
Fishing Report!
Another summer season in the mountains is coming to an end, and now we get into the fun part!!
Its Hopper time!!
With the warm days of summer coming to a close it’s time to concentrate on throwing some big flies at big fish. There are plenty about at the moment and have we got some flies perfect for the job. Manic Tackle has just released some fantastic new hopper patterns to compliment the already “famous” KK Henneberry Hopper. The new Hoppers are just amazing! We have the new Hopeless Hopper, The Hyper Hopper, and the Hi-Vis Hopper. These hopper patterns are not only great looking and effective flies, but they are almost indestructible!!
Generally, fishing has been sensational in the rivers and lakes around the region with the higher cooler water being more productive. The Thredbo River is fishing well above Skitube with great levels maintained throughout the season the fish have been very comfortable. Dry fly fishing is producing many quality fish off the surface with hopper, mayfly, and beetles being my go-to patterns at this time of the year. When things get a little slow I like to tie a very small tungsten nymph underneath a larger dry just to cover some deep water. Hare & Copper, Flashback Pheasant tails do the trick nicely.
The Mowambah River has been a standout this season with fish pushing the 4lb mark not being uncommon. The better fishing being from the Moonbah bridge upstream. There has been lots of hoppers on this stretch of river and the windy days are best. Wooly bugger fishing can also be a blast when the water gets a bit discoloured after a rainfall, The takes from swinging a wet are insane!!
Meanwhile, Lakes Jindabyne and Eucumbene are better left to early morning or later in the evening as the edges are still a bit warm for daytime fishing. Eucumbene is the standout of the two lakes with some solid mudeye hatches bringing the fish in nice and close.
The high country is also worth a look as the ambient temps have been a little cooler and there are plenty of fish to catch and water to explore.
We have plenty of stock to get you out into the fishing and one of the largest collection of flies in Australia!! Come on down to the snowy mountains and explore the outdoors.
